Ondo 2020: JDPC, others want stop to Violence against Women ahead of election

Stakeholders on Wednesday urged INEC ,security agencies as well as others involved in the Ondo state governorship election on Saturday to put in place stringent measures against any form of violence against women participating in political processes.

Such types of violence includes Physical ,Sexual, Psychological and Economic.

This formed parts of the resolutions made at the end of a dialogue session in akure with security agencies organized by the Justice,Development and Peace Centre ,JDPC, in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development, USAID and The National Democratic Institute, NDI.

Representatives from the Nigerian army ,police and NSCDC ,civil societies , among other stakeholders attended the session .

They urged all the security agencies to strive to protect the rights of women during the electioneering process by deploying security officials even to the hard to reach communities.

According to the session , issue of discrimination and cultural limitation that stereotypes women should be addressed even in  homes.

The session also stressed the need for Serious advocacy to fast-track the passage of the Violence against persons prosecution law of Ondo state.

Other resolutions included “Implementation of a mechanism to fast track the enforcement of the provisions of the Violence against persons prosecution law.

“ There must be an advocacy to strengthen girl child education;

“ The need for the government to regulate the cost of politicking by political parties as it is too high;

“ There must be serious campaign against indecent and provocative dressing in the society as issue of gender based matter should be included in school curriculum while the security of women is guaranteed.

“ Government policies should be channeled to encourage women;

“Advocacy visit to INEC to advocate for proper queues during elections;
Maintenance of separate queues for men and women. ”
