Strong indications emerged yesterday that the suppressed cold war between some governors elected on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and the party’s governorship, Eyitayo Jegede is already threatening early preparations for the October 10 election.
It was reliably gathered the development was responsible for the postponement of the campaign flag off earlier scheduled for Saturday, September 5 in a tweet by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who doubles as the Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council.
A fresh statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary of the National Campaign Council, Hon. Abdullahi Hussaini MaiBasira announced that rally has been postponed by one week. The event now holds on September 12.
A former member of the National Executive Committee(NEC) confided in a team of reporters that the change of date may not be unconnected with the refusal of some of the PDP governors to give “full commitment to the Ondo project”.
“The decision of the national campaign committee to postpone the rally has no link with the decision of the APC to hold its own rally on the same but the inability of the party national leadership to reconcile Jegege and some PDP governors.
“Some PDP governors have vowed to shun invitations for the Jegede campaign flag-off in Akure, the state capital following his alleged refusal to pick one the party governorship aspirants, who participated in the party July 22, gubernatorial primary as his running mate.
“From all indications, Jegede’s insistence on Hon. Ikengboju Gboluga as his running mate has caused a serious crack in the party and if this is not properly managed, it may consume the party on October 10.
“Most of our party’s governors and even a larger chunk of the NWC are unhappy that Jegede turned down their offer despite their pleas that he should pick one of the governorship aspirants as running mate.
“I am not sure if our governors will show serious commitment in this Ondo project. You can see how they are confronting their colleagues in APC in Edo State. They are battle-ready to retain the state for Edo State”.
” Holding the exercise this Saturday, would have been exposed us that we are not together because only Governor would have attended. Didn’t you observe that on the day of the Campaign Council inauguration in Abuja, Governor Makinde was the only PDP governors at the event.
“I can tell you that before the party chose Makinde as the chairman for the campaign, some PDP governors were approached to lead the campaign council but they turned down the offer.
“Makinde only summoned the courage to lead that battle because Jegede is one of his lawyers and a maternal relation from Akure, where Jegede hails from”.
