Lassa Fever: death toll rises in Ondo

Report says recorded cases of lassa fever in Ondo state are on the increase with 112 cases and 20 confirmed deaths so far.

The Ondo State Government however  attributed the increase in the number of cases of Lassa fever in the state to influx of patients from neighbouring states who wanted to benefit from its free treatment.

The state Epidemiologist, Dr Stephen Fagbemi, confirmed  that no fewer than 20 people had been killed by   the disease in the state.

On his part, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro,  said, “We are having the high figure because Ondo State is the only state that the treatment of Lassa fever is free of charge.

I think we are having people coming from other areas for free treatment.”

The 112 recorded cases of lassa fever were said to have been mainly from Akoko South-West, Ose, Owo, Akure South and Ondo West Local government Areas.
