Analysis of Trump’s farewell speech

We were hit so hard’ – Trump

The president reflected on the coronavirus pandemic – which has dominated the last nine months of his presidency.

“We did something that is a medical miracle and that is the vaccine,” he says.

He says the virus is a “horrible thing” and once again calls it the “China virus” but pays “great love” to families who have suffered greatly.

Trump upbeat in his final address

Considering these are his last remarks as president, Trump seems quite lively and positive here in his delivery – contrary to US media reports that he has been seething for days.

“We’ve left it all on the field,” he says, to cheers from his supporters.

He’s trying to rouse his followers and make it a moment of celebration rather than gloom.

“You are amazing,” he tells them, to more applause.

Trump lists achievements

The president is listing what he sees as the greatest achievements of his time in office.

“I hope they don’t raise your taxes, but if they do – I told you so!” he says.

Trump thanks family and team

In a farewell address at Joint Base Andrews, met with cheers from supporters, the president said people have “no idea how hard” his family had worked during his four years in office.

“What we’ve done has been amazing by any standard,” he said, before pointing to changes he made to the US military.

Trump wishes successors ‘great success’

Concluding his speech, President Donald Trump says it has been the “greatest honour” to be president. Addressing supporters, he says he will “always fight for you” and will be “watching and listening” and pledges to be back in some capacity.

He also wishes the new administration “great success” for the future – but does not address Joe Biden or Kamala Harris by name.
