Fear in Bariga as Gunmen Storm PDP Ward Secretary’s Residence Again

Residents of Bariga are once again gripped by fear following a fresh attack on the residence of community leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ward Secretary, Edward Oluwaniyi.

On the night of October 30, 2025, unidentified men reportedly stormed 3 Onabola Street in a coordinated operation that many believe signals a renewed threat to his life and that of his family.

Neighbours said the assailants moved from house to house, demanding to know the whereabouts of Mr. Oluwaniyi, his wife and their children.

Unknown to the attackers, the family had earlier relocated from the apartment for safety reasons. Frustrated in their search, the men allegedly ransacked parts of the surroundings before leaving, vowing to track down the family wherever they might be.

The incident has revived memories of a similar attack on September 6, 2021, when Mr. Oluwaniyi narrowly escaped death after being ambushed by about five suspected assailants.

Eyewitnesses recalled that he was run over with a vehicle and physically assaulted, leaving him with multiple severe injuries.

He was later rescued by a passerby and rushed to Adekola Hospital in Bariga, where he received emergency treatment.

According to residents, the attackers at the time reportedly threatened to eliminate his entire household, a warning many now fear is being revisited.

Friends and community members describe Mr. Oluwaniyi as a grassroots mobiliser known for mediating disputes, supporting vulnerable residents and strengthening PDP membership within the ward.

Some believe his rising political influence may have drawn hostility from opponents.

The latest development has heightened anxiety across the community, with residents expressing concern over their safety.

“If someone like Edward could be targeted twice, then none of us is safe,” a community elder said.

When contacted previously, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the earlier incident and assured that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure security in the area.

For many in Bariga, the repeated attacks go beyond politics. They reflect the broader insecurity confronting citizens who step forward to serve their communities.

As investigations continue, residents are left with lingering questions about accountability, safety and the persistence of violent rivalries in local politics.
