Workers of the federal government-owned Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure, the Ondo state capital have alleged the Managing Director of the institute, Dr Olugbenga Samuel Olusunle of diverting about #2billion meant for the institute.
In a petition signed on behalf of the workers by one, Wale Morakinyo, the concerned Staff alleged Olusunle of diverting funds allocated to the institute by the federal government since he assumed office in April, 2012.

The workers said, “it should be noted that most of the contractors are just acting as a cover to siphon money from the capital development fund account for projects that Olasunde knew would not be executed, instead the money find its way back to the private pocket through a dedicated account.
“We feel it is unhealthy for the nation at this time of her growth, when the confidence of several citizens of the country needs to be restored in the capacity of the Federal Government to deliver sustainable growth to still be having corrupt vision less people as the heads of the MDA’s.
“It is in view of this that we are forwarding this petition with the attached document that include GIFMIS Warrant lines, GIFMIS-Payment requests, GIFMIS-Payment batch report to your office in the hope motion for thorough investigation and other actions that you would expeditiously set machinery as you may deem fit.
“Our prayers: to carry out thorough investigation into handling of both the capital and overhead fund given to the institute since March 2012 when he assumed office as the MD/CEO of the institute.
“To investigate the undue (controversial) tenure elongation as that would make to be in that position for Eleven (11) years, to remain in office as MD/CEO till 2023 performance.”
“To set up a fact funding committee to pay an unscheduled visit to the institute to ascertain; The condition of all the machines and equipment he met on ground on assumption of duty as MD/CEO and the few ones he added.
“None of these machines is functioning including the one he bought as they were bought as scrap (This makes him to be addressed as damaging director by the staff) which is the reason we have not been able to render any useful service to your immediate environment in Ondo Central Senatorial District not to talk of the whole nation at large.
“To also find out what we have achieved as a research institute since 2012 when he became the MD/CEO as there are no functional machine and equipment to work towards achieving any of our mandate.
“All the landmark achievement recorded by the institute were achieved during the tenure of past MD/CEO.”
“This makes it imperative for all government appointees including all heads of MDA’s to toe the same line by being accountable and corruption free. It is however surprising when one sees some of the heads of these MDA’s still playing smart by diverting public funds meant for providing critical infrastructure to their pockets. One of such cases is that of Dr. Engr. Samuel Olugbenga O. Olusunle, the MD/CEO of EMDI, Akure, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.
“This man through his (alleged) corrupt practices has grounded all the activities of the institute since he assumed office in April, 2012. He has now corruptly enriched himself that he used to boast now that even if he is removed from office, he is already comfortable with what he has.
“Tabulated below are some of the lists of atrocities committed by Dr. Olusunle as recorded in the GIFMIS-Payment batch report for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and our own remarks based on what is on ground to help you in your investigations.
Consequent upon the receipt of the petition, officials of the Independent corrupt and other related offence Commission, (ICPC), have started investigating the financial allegations against Dr Olugbenga Olusunle.
Olusunle was recently directed to report at the Abuja office of the Commission in continuation of the investigation.
Reacting, Dr Olusunle told newsmen on telephone that it was true ICPC had commenced investigation on the allegations against him.
The Managing Director however said he would not make further comments on the allegations.
