2021 IWD: JDPC advocates resuscitation of Adult Education for Women in Ondo

Justice Development and Peace Centre ,JDPC on Monday called on the Ondo state government to revitalize its adult education programmes for women to be more involved in decision making and the development of the state.

The legal officer of the JDPC, Mrs Oluwatoba Olaifa made the call in Akure, Ondo state capital at the event organized by the state government in commemoration of this year’s International women’s day.

Mrs Olaifa lamented that “Political participation of women is very low in the State in which a lack of proper education is one of the root causes.

We call on the Ondo State government to re-vitalize the Adult program to allow more women to gain a basic education. Studies have shown that basic education influence to a large extent the decision-making of women which will have an impact on the growth of society.

In other words, the more women who are given basic education in Ondo state through adult education or other forms of learning, the better for the growth of the State. Moreover, currently, the political participation of women is very low in the State in which a lack of proper education is one of the root causes. Educational empowerment of women will also increase women’s active participation in the electoral process.”

She continued “Now is the time to sensitize all stakeholders to speak out against violence, threats, and coercion to provide an enabling environment for women to possibly run for the next gubernatorial elections and 2023 legislative elections and possibly winning and serving the citizens of Ondo State.

It is in the light of this that JDPC in collaboration with office of the wife of the Governor, major stakeholders and the public had taken commendable strides to further protect the rights of women by working towards the domestication of Violence against Persons Act in the State. Coincidentally, the VAPP Bill is being heard publicly today(Monday). ”

Olaifa urged the state government to among other recommendations “work with civil society organizations with gender focus to provide awareness on inclusion in politics and civic engagement. ”
