Ondo Farmers groan as Herdsmen destroy Food Crops Worth Millions of Naira

In less than five days that southwest governors met with leaders of Miyetti Allah in a move to stop illegal grazing and banditry,some herdsmen have allegedly invaded Idanre community in Ondo state with hundreds of cows, destroying farms worth of millions.

It was gathered that the people of Obasooto Camp, along the newly constructed Idanre / Akure road in the state had their food crops eaten up by cows of herdsmen.

The farmers, while speaking with newsmen said their crops were ravaged over the night three days ago by the cows as they only woke up to see their farms desolate thereby losing farm crops worth millions of Naira.

One of them, Mr. Friday Ayaghi, who hails from Kogi State and working in the area as a labourer said his cassava plantation with which he claimed he intended to feed his wife and children had been eaten up along with other food crops.

According to Ayaghi feeding his family now has become a challenge which seems insurmountable.

Narrating his ordeal,a physically challenged octogenarian. Pa Olatuja Idowu said his farm and that of his wife with cassava, pineapples, plantains, cocoyam were all destroyed by the herdsmen and their cows.

He said they first attacked his wife’s farm some ten days ago but came again three days ago to destroy his farm and the rest of his wife’s farm.

Another victim, Mrs Sarah Akingbesote explained that all her over six hundred heaps of cocoyam were eaten up by the herdsmen’s cows. ” How and what will I eat now”? She rhetorically asked.

Efforts to get the Divisional Police Station, Olofin, Mr. Clement Akinnola to speak on the situation were unsuccessful as all calls put across to his mobile phone were not answered.
