Mayhem as unknown corpse buried in Ondo community

An unidentified corpse has been illegally buried in Ipogun community in the Ifedore Local Government area of Ondo State by yet to be identified men, The Hope Metro reports.

The incident is now causing mayhem and apprehension in the community.

The Hope Metro gathered that seven unknown men had brought the corpse into a farmland, where they buried it without the consent of the people.

The development, it was learnt, did not go down well with the people of the community who demanded that the corpse be exhumed.

It was further learnt that a bank’s van suddenly drove into the community towards Isobo farmland where a certain farmer popularly known as Dickson lives.

Dickson who gave a description of the scene said “the people were seven in number as they were strange faces with a strange vehicle in the farm land of Ipogun.

His words, ”I hid somewhere to watch the men as they brought out a coffin from the vehicle and started digging. It took them over an hour to finish as they placed the body on the ground.

”I could not stop them at that moment because it could endanger my life. So, I quickly put calls across to the Kabiyesi of Ipogun and my brother in the community over the strange vehicle and what they had done.

It was further gathered that some curious youths in the community stopped the vehicle, but it was on top speed in a bid to escape which aroused the suspicion of the people.

However, another set of youths in the community who heard about the incident were said to have intercepted the vehicle, while they arrested the seven men and handed them over to the police in Ilara.

Our correspondent gathered that by the time the people got to the station on Saturday morning, they were told that the men had been released without informing the community.

The Hope Metro spoke with the community youth leaders of Ipogun, Mr Awoleyin Fagboroye who said, “we are very curious of the person that was illegally buried on our land. I was contacted by one of our youths on that day. So, I took them to Ilara police station.

“We never got their names as they claimed the deceased had died since last year. They said the deceased was from Akwa Ibom State, and that the corpse was staying too long in the mortuary.

“But when we requested for the mortuary papers from them, they claimed they stole the corpse from the mortuary and there was no paper.

“We are very worried because our farmers can’t go to the farm any longer. We don’t know the consequence of the death before they came to illegally bury the corpse in our farm land.

“On getting to the police station the following day, we learnt that a man identified as Akogun of Akure came to bail them while their vehicles was left with the police.

The Kabiyesi of Ipogun, His Royal Majesty, Oba Raphael Oluwadare Ojo, in a chat with The Hope Metro expressed bitterness over the act.

He said, “I got a distress call from my people that they saw two vehicles entering the community. I immediately gave them the go ahead to check what they came for. But I was told they had already buried a dead body.

The area is called Adebowale farmland in Ipogun.

“I took it up, I asked them to lock up the community gate and find out what they came in to do and who they came to bury in our land.

“My youths got them and handed them over to the officers at Ilara Police station  handling the case.

The Oba, who confirmed that one of the owners of the farmland was with them said, “truly speaking, it was one of the owners of the farmland that allowed them to bury the corpse in the land.

”But we don’t want a situation in the future, that somebody from the family would write a petition that a corpse was buried illegally on their land. That was why we requested for mortuary papers to clear such.”

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer confirmed to The Hope Metro that, truly a corpse was buried in Ilara by three men and not seven as claimed by the indigenes.

The people said they contacted an indigene of Ipogun for permission to bury their brother who was from Bayelsa State because they didn’t have the money to transport him to their home town.

According to the DPO, permission was taken from an indigene of Ipogun who was not disclosed.
